9 best professional coffee machines — Rating 2022

The editors of the Expertology magazine invited professional HoReCa consultants to cooperate, who offered a selection of the best professional coffee machines to date in terms of price, performance, functionality and quality.

Features of professional coffee machines

To begin with, let’s define the main characteristics that distinguish household coffee makers from professional coffee machines.

Lossless performance

Coffee makers that can prepare coffee and various drinks quickly and a lot are far from always professional only on this basis. It is also important that the prepared drinks do not lose quality due to such a speed. This, in particular, can distinguish professional coffee makers from office coffee makers, which, although more productive than home ones, are not quite capable of meeting the needs of an establishment with more or less active traffic.

Another characteristic difference between professional coffee machines in terms of performance is the ability to prepare several different drinks at the same time, which implies the presence of several “seats” for cups.

Resource

In general, a professional coffee machine should be, by definition, more durable, durable and fault-tolerant. All this implies a deliberately increased quality of materials and assembly, and hence a significantly higher cost.

Autonomy and automation

The difference in terminology between a coffee machine and a coffee maker is very conditional, but there is an accepted difference — a coffee machine implies a complete cycle from grinding coffee beans to obtaining a finished drink. The task is to make the bartender-barista require a minimum of movements if the establishment does not involve the preparation of author’s “craft” coffee. For fast food establishments with intensive traffic, this is a prerequisite.

Convenience

This characteristic is related to the previous one and has something in common with performance. There are more subjective criteria than objective ones, but there are also quite clear recommendations. For example, a useful, and often necessary, accessory for a coffee machine is the top compartment for drying dishes.

Functional

Finally, in most cases, the coffee machine requires the ability to prepare not only classic espresso, but also Americano, cappuccino, latte, and other drinks, such as tea. Also, the characteristic of the functional includes the informativeness of the machine — the presence of a screen with an indication of the status, errors, service messages.

Rating of the best professional coffee machines

The best budget professional coffee machines

To begin with, consider a selection of coffee machines, although entry-level, but still professional. The term “budget” applies to them only relatively — in comparison with high-performance machines for HoReCa, which we will pay attention to in the second part of the review. Such models are designed for offices or catering establishments where coffee is not the most popular menu item. The material is based on the results of the analysis of technical characteristics on the resource https://rankquality.com/coffee-maker/.

Saeco Lirika One Touch Cappuccino

Rating: 4.9

Saeco Lirika One Touch Cappuccino

Let’s start with the most inexpensive device that can cope with average loads, providing decent quality drinks, convenience and speed, without requiring too much attention from the barista. The manufacturer is the Italian company Saeco International Group SpA with almost half a century of history. Since 2009 owned by Philips. This model is directly assembled in Romania.

This is an automatic coffee machine designed for coffee beans with one brew group for one to two cups. The device dimensions are 22x38x45 cm, weight is 8 kg, body color is metallic silver. Operated by electronic push buttons, equipped with a compact LCD display. Power — 1850 W, pressure — 15 bar (without pressure gauge), boiler-type heater. Separate boilers for coffee and boiling water are used.

The coffee machine provides a full cycle, from the grinding of grains. The degree of grinding can be selected from 5 positions. The raw material container holds about 500 g of coffee beans. The volume of the water compartment is 2.5 liters.

The coffee machine has the following basic programs: cappuccino, espresso, latte macchiato, americano, ristretto. Cappuccino preparation is even included in the name of the model thanks to the One Touch Cappuccino function — cooking with one touch. To be extremely meticulous, then you still need two clicks on the factory settings, and one — if you program the button.

Additional useful functions: coffee strength control, hot water portion adjustment, pre-wetting, automatic decalcification. The machine allows you to adjust the coffee tab and the volume of the drink based on one cup. For the convenience of the barista, the height of the dispensing unit can be adjusted. For safety against accidental (or non-random) access, a lock is provided on the container lid.

The delivery set of the coffee machine includes a separate power cable, a grid for a drip tray, a cappuccinatore, a spout for boiling water, a grinding degree adjustment knob, and documentation.

The formally described model is considered for home use, but its functionality and resource are enough for a small cafeteria, and the price at the same time cannot be compared with professional options in every sense.

In general, there are practically no serious comments on this model. The only warning from the professional consultants of our publication is that the cappuccinatore still falls short of the professional level in terms of resource and endurance.

Advantages

  • European assembly;
  • large tanks for coffee, water and milk;
  • five degrees of adjustment of the degree of grinding;
  • separate boilers;
  • One Touch Cappuccino function;
  • simple cleaning;
  • combination of price, functionality and quality.

Flaws

  • weak cappuccinatore, breaks down after a few months of intensive use.

Philips EP3243 Series 3200 LatteGo

Rating: 4.8

Philips EP3243 Series 3200 LatteGo

The second relatively inexpensive coffee machine in our review, close to professional characteristics, is one of the popular Philips models. It is slightly less productive than the previous one, but allows you to significantly more finely adjust the degree of grinding. The Philips brand needs no introduction and the machine is assembled in Romania.

This is also a fully automatic coffee machine, like the previous one, but with different types of suitable raw materials — the device prepares drinks from both ground coffee and grains. At the same time, there are as many as 12 degrees of grinding, the container is designed for 275 g of grains. Touch control, backlit LCD screen. The power of the device is 1500 watts. The capacity of the water tank is 1.8 liters, for milk — 0.26 liters. The water level indicator is not provided, which is inconvenient for use in the HoReCa area. Maximum pressure — up to 15 bar, no pressure gauge.

The water hardness in this model can be adjusted, but automatic decalcification for descaling is not provided. The preparation of cappuccino is complete and automatic, and the technology of the LatteGo cappuccino maker allows you to obtain perfect milk foam at the optimum temperature. Main automatic programs: cappuccino, espresso, latte macchiato, americano. The machine also allows you to adjust the volume of a serving of boiling water, the temperature of the drink (3 positions), the strength (3 positions). Well thought out waste disposal and cleaning system. The waste container is designed for 12 servings of prepared coffee.

The absence of the automatic decalcification function mentioned above is partly compensated by the use of the AquaClean filter. This is a patented technology developed by the Italian company Saeco, which allows you to prepare up to several thousand cups of coffee before the inside of the coffee machine needs to be descaled, and the machine will specifically report this need.

Additional model features that may matter: removable brew group, ceramic millstones, two servings, eco mode, 2 year manufacturer’s warranty. The package includes the aforementioned AquaClean filter, lubricant in a tube, a measuring spoon, a cover for storing the cappuccinatore, and an indicator for determining the hardness of water.

Advantages

  • quality and convenience;
  • raw materials — grain or ground coffee;
  • 12 degrees of grinding adjustment;
  • cappuccinatore LatteGo;
  • AquaClean filter included;
  • convenient and fast cleaning;
  • equipment.

Flaws

  • no automatic decalcification;
  • no water level indicator.

Saeco SM5573 PicoBaristo Deluxe

Rating: 4.7

Saeco SM5573 PicoBaristo Deluxe

Now consider another Italian coffee machine brand Saeco. This time it will be an entry-level model, but still a professional one without any reservations. Advanced functionality, a good resource, fine settings, saving a lot of recipe presets — all this allows you to successfully use the machine in the HoReCa field in an establishment with moderate traffic.

First, let’s briefly go over the key technical characteristics of the model. The machine is fully automatic, accepts ground or grain coffee as raw material. Electronic control. The screen is small, but colorful and quite informative. Maximum pressure — 15 bar, pressure gauge is not provided. Holds 1.7 liters of water, up to 250 g of grains in a separate container and up to 0.5 liters of milk in a jug. Boiler type heater. The brew group is one, allows you to prepare two cups of the same type of coffee at the same time. Machine dimensions — 21x43x34 cm, weight — 7.2 kg. Case material — plastic with metal finish.

The device is designed to prepare cappuccino, espresso, latte macchiato, lungo, americano, ristretto in different variations to taste. You can get the right taste by finely adjusting the recipe — there are 12 pre-installed programs, and the device also allows you to create your own recipe programs and save up to 75 original recipes in memory. This opportunity allows you to easily develop a “signature” recipe for a particular institution, which will be unique in its own way.

The speed of preparing drinks for this model is not a record, but acceptable. Warm-up time — more than 70 seconds, directly preparing a cup of coffee — about 40 seconds. The fortress can be adjusted within 5 levels, the temperature — within 3 levels. These and other settings can be saved to a single user profile — up to 4 profiles in total.

A strange flaw in this model is the lack of a sensor for filling the waste container. This may seem like a trifle, but not for a professional device, delays in the work of which can create inconvenience for the customers of the establishment. The container is designed for 14 conditional servings, and if you do not keep track of the overflow, cleaning is likely to be quite uncomfortable in terms of time and effort.

Advantages

  • full professional level;
  • quality of materials;
  • reliability and durability;
  • simple and clear control;
  • 12 degrees of grinding;
  • temperature and strength adjustment;
  • saving up to 75 recipes;
  • support for up to 4 customizable user profiles;
  • support for AquaClean filters.

Flaws

  • there is no sensor for filling the waste container, in general, not the easiest cleaning.

Saeco SM7580 Xelsis

Rating: 4.7

Saeco SM7580 Xelsis

And another coffee machine from the Italian Saeco brand is the Xelsis model with even more interesting functionality, flexible settings and decent performance in HoReCa conditions. Its cost is several times higher than the first model in our review, but the characteristics fully justify this price.

This machine has one brew group, which means it is quite compact and suitable for a small cafe-bar — 28x39x49 cm and weighs 8 kg. Fully automatic, ground or grain coffee is suitable as a raw material. Operation — touch panel with convenient large buttons and a compact LCD screen. The maximum working pressure is 15 bar. Boiler type heater. The volume of water is 1.7 l. The volume of the waste container (hmykha) is designed for 14 standard servings.

The functionality of the Saeco SM7580 Xelsis is generally similar to the previous models, but there are important differences in the direction of improvement and expansion of capabilities. So, in addition to adjusting the temperature, strength and volume of a portion, the “quick steam” function has been added here. There are 12 degrees of coffee grinding and the same number of standard drink programs. The fortress can be adjusted within 5 degrees. Individual settings of the coffee machine can be stored in an individual barista profile, up to six profiles in total.

An important improvement in this model is the improved protection against scale. So, compatibility with innovative AquaClean filters has also been introduced here, and in addition, an automatic decalcification function has been implemented. The use of AquaClean filters alone is enough to make up to 5,000 cups of coffee, and in combination with automatic cleaning, this gives an almost complete guarantee against limescale getting into drinks and malfunctioning of the device.

Advantages

  • materials and assembly;
  • ease of use;
  • 12 degrees of grinding;
  • perfect milk foam using Latte Perfetto technology;
  • reliability, reliability and durability;
  • double protection against scale — AquaClean filter and automatic decalcification function;

Flaws

  • Still, some users consider the price too high.

Caffitaly Professional S9001

Rating: 4.7

Caffitaly Professional S9001

The selection of relatively inexpensive professional coffee machines according to Expertology magazine will be completed by a model whose professional level is already emphasized in the name. And this is not a marketing ploy. In a number of important parameters, it differs significantly from the above options, and our experts included it in the review, not least for this reason — the machine satisfies some specific requirements and conditions.

The fact that the car is clearly not for the kitchen in a city apartment is already indicated by its dimensions and weight — 55x40x44 cm and 26 kg, respectively. Materials and assembly are exceptionally high-quality, reliable. Stainless steel is used in the most potentially vulnerable nodes, which guarantees durability, fault tolerance and, in general, a significant resource.

This model is already designed only for capsules, and coffee beans or even ground loose coffee as a raw material will not work. This can be considered a disadvantage that limits the flexibility of using the device, but it must also be said that such a narrow specialization is by no means rare in professional coffee machines.

The second important distinguishing feature is the presence of two independent brewing groups. They are even physically separated by a block with a control panel. The water tank is the most impressive compared to previous models — 4 liters. But this is not the limit, and if the traffic in the cafeteria during peak hours “rolls over”, the machine can obviously be connected to the water supply for uninterrupted supply. The capacity of the waste container is also decent — up to 60 capsules.

Another limitation that the buyer may not like is only manual preparation of cappuccino. But this is a moot point, as many baristas will disagree that fully automatic cappuccino is something good. Moreover, this model has a special nozzle — panarello, with which you can get the perfect foam for cappuccino, latte and other similar drinks.

The machine is easy to use and its professional status will not scare away even a novice bartender. The control panel buttons are large and informative, they change color depending on the mode: green — ready to start the function, yellow — cooking in progress, red — something is wrong, intervention is required.

Advantages

  • two independent brew groups;
  • height-adjustable dispensers;
  • fast heating of the boiler;
  • the ability to connect to the water supply;
  • stable quality of drinks;
  • large service bins (water, waste);
  • reliability, fault tolerance, durability.

Flaws

  • raw materials — only coffee capsules;
  • manual preparation of cappuccino.

The best high-end professional coffee machines

In the second part of the review of the best professional coffee machines for the HoReCa industry, we will introduce you to the most remarkable high-end models. All of them are very expensive, and older models can only be afforded by very confident HoReCa enterprises or new establishments with decent investments.

Let’s make a small remark. This part of the review will include semi-automatic machines. Semi-automatic — this should not be understood in any way as a disadvantage. Here and below, the retreat from full automation is just a sign of high class. The thing is that full automation eliminates the role of a barista and makes it difficult to prepare coffee for real gourmets who distinguish the subtlest shades. Therefore, full “automatic machines” are good for fast food enterprises, and for more sophisticated and expensive establishments, some space is already needed for the realization of the barista’s talent and professional skills.

Nuova Simonelli Appia II 1Gr V high groups

Rating: 5.0

Nuova Simonelli Appia II 1Gr V high groups

We are the first to bring to your attention a coffee machine manufactured by the famous Italian company Nuova Simonelli. The company has been producing high-quality equipment for the preparation of coffee drinks since 1936 and exports it all over the world. Appia II has become a successful continuation of the successful and sought-after model of the first generation Appia. Actually, the second from the first is fundamentally no different.

This is a professional rozhkovy coffee machine of semi-automatic type of commercial orientation. There is an even newer series in the Nuova Simonelli lineup — Appia Life, but Expertology experts recommend Appia II, as it is considered in professional communities to be something like a “default coffee machine” for the HoReCa industry. It is much more carefully tested by time and by many establishments around the world and in the CIS in particular.

There are several modifications in the series that differ in the number and parameters of the brew groups. They are indicated directly in the name, respectively — 1gr, 2gr and 3gr with letter prefixes that indicate the parameters of the groups (low, high, different) and the availability of options (power, boiler volume, etc.).

The most versatile is the 2gr modification with two brew groups. But as a starting point, we will take the most relatively inexpensive modification 1Gr with the prefix V, which implies high groups — the distance from the working surface to the nose of the horn is 140 mm.

The power of the machine is 2000W. The material of the horn is only metal, and this is another indicator of a high-end device. The boiler heater is made of copper. Volume — 5 liters. Limiting pressure — 15 bar. There is a pressure gauge, but the accuracy of its readings is not perfect. There are such important functions for pro machines as pre-wetting and warming cups. An anti-drip system is not provided, which upsets some buyers. This model is only for ground coffee as raw material.

The machine is not that very overall — 40x53x55 cm, but definitely heavy — 42 kg, which must be taken into account when planning the installation site. The case is made of durable ABS plastic, the design is very attractive and presentable. Stable landing on rubber feet.

Advantages

  • a legendary brand with a century of history, recognition all over the world;
  • expensive and high quality materials;
  • time-tested;
  • metal horn and copper boiler;
  • Possibility of connection to the water supply.

Flaws

  • not too accurate pressure gauge;
  • there is no anti-drip system.

La Spaziale S9 EK, 2 low groups

Rating: 4.9

La Spaziale S9 EK, 2 low groups

In contrast to the previous compact one-group model, consider a professional coffee machine from another manufacturer — La Spaziale. This is also an Italian company with a rich history dating back to the 70s of the last century.

This machine is already fully automatic. Dimensions — 580x530x520 mm, weight — 54 kg. The body is metal. Convenient control panel, the same convenient and reliable levers for supplying steam or water. The device is available in several body colors — black, white, red and anthracite. The heater is a boiler with a volume of 5 liters. Steam serves as a heat agent in the preparation of drinks — this way it is not only possible to achieve high consumer characteristics of drinks, but also save electricity, and also partly prevent the early formation of scale.

Steam is supplied by the machine through rotating pipes, boiling water — through taps. Dosing is carried out automatically. For personal control of the barista over the pressure in the pump and boiler, pressure gauges are provided for each group. Each manometer is equipped with a double scale to control separately the pressure in the boiler and pump. The boiler here has improved characteristics — copper with a nickel-plated surface, increased strength. There is a water level sensor.

The power consumption of the machine is 2.3 kW. In addition to the appliance itself, the delivery set includes three filter holders, a spare set of filter screens for the brew group, a filter extractor and a brush.

Among the features of the model, one can also distinguish electronic temperature control in the boiler, while these temperatures are displayed by a barograph with a pleasant backlight. From emergency situations associated with overheating, protect the thermostat. Any difficulties or malfunctions will be signaled by the machine.

  • materials and assembly;
  • metal case;
  • two independent brew groups;
  • reliability and reliability;
  • fault indicators;
  • high strength boiler;
  • precise pressure gauges with double scale;
  • safety thermostat;
  • equipment.

Flaws

Ascaso Barista T Zero two-group, black

Rating: 4.9

Ascaso Barista T Zero two-group, black

The third premium professional coffee machine in Expertology’s thematic review is a bright product of the Spanish company Ascaso. Here, premium materials, powerful performance and impeccable quality are combined with the same impeccable style.

The Barista T Zero model is average in terms of price and features in this series. We take it to demonstrate the possibilities. In the assortment there is also a one-group Bar One and also a two-group, but more expensive Barista T Plus. It is more expensive by as much as 2 thousand euros, and whether the additions are worth that kind of money is a big question.

The dimensions of the coffee machine are quite impressive — 700x535x475 mm, weight — 71 kg. Yes, in terms of weight, this espresso machine has nothing “household”, it weighs like an adult, and this must be taken into account from the very beginning. It is powered by a 220 V network, the power consumption level is 3.5 W. The appearance is unusually spectacular — the surfaces sparkle with real stainless steel and chrome. There is no place here, not only props and imitations, but even the slightest savings on materials. This is evidenced even by the case, the walls of which are made of stainless steel 2.5 mm thick! Restrained, but unusually stylish exterior with wood trim elements.

Let’s take a quick look at the specification. The machine is built using multi-circuit technology — in this case, two circuits are meant, giving complete independence of the brew groups. Separate steam boiler. Develops pressure up to 20 bar. It is possible to connect to the water supply. There is a PID controller with a factor of + 0.1º for each group separately and for the steam boiler. Steamer with 360 degree swivel freedom. The work area is brightly lit.

Two separate stainless steel boilers, combined with other remarkable features, provide excellent thermal stability within +/- 0.2º. This already allows you to prepare drinks that can satisfy the delicate taste of a sophisticated connoisseur.

Separately, it is worth adding that this model is also not without belonging to high technologies. Ascaso’s author’s recipes were originally incorporated into the device’s software, and the manufacturer periodically releases updates.

The delivery set of the machine includes: a holder with two feed spouts, a holder plug, a tamper, a filter for one espresso, a filter for two espressos.

Advantages

  • premium class;
  • expensive and high-quality materials;
  • elegant style;
  • perfect brewing of espresso;
  • perfect temperature stability;
  • many settings;
  • 5 programmable volume options;
  • opportunities for customization;
  • convenient cleaning and maintenance.

Flaws

  • no fundamental flaws were found.

Dalla Corte Evolution Nera (3GR)

Dalla Corte Evolution Nera (3GR)

The review of the best professional coffee machines of 2020 according to Expertology will be completed by the most powerful, productive and expensive premium machine from the more or less affordable HoReCa segment for medium-sized businesses. This is a three-group model Evolution Nera manufactured by the Italian company Dalla Corte, which has its roots in the middle of the last century.

Machine dimensions — 940x505x550 mm, weight — 89 kg. There are no questions at all about the quality of materials and assembly, the name Dalla Corte alone is enough here. The fact is that the company during its history has gained fame not only for coffee makers and coffee machines, but for a number of engineering inventions and improvements in this area, as well as for a truly fanatical diligence in terms of attention to small details. Even such a seemingly elementary accessory as a portafilter, if its manufacturer is Dalla Corte, can easily cost 500–600 US dollars.

Now let’s go through the main points of the specification. As you can already see even from the name, the machine includes three working groups. All of them are completely independent, each has a separate boiler, and one more specifically for steam. Only ground coffee is used as raw material. The power consumption is more than significant — up to 6300 W — this must be taken into account during installation, it may be necessary to replace the electrical wiring section.

The example mentioned above with the cost of a portafilter can be imputed to this coffee machine as a disadvantage. Components and spare parts for it are prohibitively expensive, and any repair is a pure ruin. The car itself is reliable and durable, it doesn’t just break down, but it’s still advisable to try to eliminate any threats, especially the human factor.

Advantages

  • a brand with an impeccable reputation;
  • the highest technological level;
  • the manufacturer’s unparalleled attention to detail and quality control;
  • three independent working groups;
  • four boilers for working groups and one separately for steam;
  • reliability and non-failure operation.

Flaws

  • prohibitive high cost of parts and components.
