Color Features

A children’s room in gray tones is a universal solution. It is suitable for boys, girls, teenagers and newborns. In addition, this is an achromatic color, it is not represented in the color palette. And, like white or black, it goes with any color scheme, enhances and mutes it, depending on what result you want to get. If gray is the base color, it’s easy to update the interior by simply changing accents or adding new colors.

Another advantage is the use in any style. This is an actual basis for scandi, provence, modern direction and loft. They are easily adapted to the decoration of the child’s room.

Combinations with other colors

Since gray is an achromat, you can add any color to it. We will consider the most popular and spectacular combinations.

Nursery in gray-yellow tones

The neutral base goes well with the sunny and cheerful color. It emphasizes the brightness and saturation of this color scheme.

  • The lighter the base, the more pastel the yellow should be. This is the simplest rule for selecting colors by saturation.
  • It is easy to pick up rich yellow for dark shades like graphite. However, designers often break these rules by choosing lemon to light gray.

Mustard is an analogue of yellow — this solution is suitable for a teenager’s room. In a nursery for a baby, this combination can look messy. But for a more adult interior — a non-standard technique. You can make the interior more interesting due to the play of shades. Try using several graphite and yellow shades, from darker to lighter. It will be enough to take 2-3 additional colors, no more, so as not to blur the design. Mix them in decoration, in textiles and furniture.

With pink

A gray-pink nursery is a classic solution for girls. However, it can be considered both for a boy and for twins of different sexes.

The rules for choosing the brightness and saturation of colors are exactly the same here: a delicate palette will suit a light base, saturated palette — a dark one.

  • As an addition to the gray-pink range, consider beige, it will add softness and warmth to the interior.
  • Blue accents look good too. The proportions depend on the amount of pink. With a grayish base, pink can become an addition that takes a third, and blue — an accent 10%. But you can increase its share to half.

In the teenage room, complex shades look more interesting. Instead of grayish, you can take beige-gray, and replace pink with powdery or dusty.

A more rebellious interior can be created in dark colors with bright electric notes. This combination will look great in a modern style and in a loft. Complement it with rough textures like a brick or concrete accent wall, neon signs and hooligan posters.

With blue color

The nursery in gray colors with the addition of blue is also universal. Usually, more delicate shades are chosen for the kids’ room, and darker tones are suitable for teenagers. But there are no strict rules.

The gray-blue scale fits well with white as the main color. The design is fresh, it is easy to stylize it under the marine theme.

Lemon can become an accent in the gray-blue range — this is a contrasting tone that forms a harmonious pair. A grayish base will balance, soothe this combination.

monochrome room

Another stylish option, but it’s definitely not for everyone. The room is as calm as possible. You can complement the grayish palette with the same neutral colors: beige, white, milky.

So that the design does not look boring, designers rely on textures and prints. These can be drawings on the walls, interesting textiles: bedspreads and curtains, furniture upholstery.

Options for use in the interior

There are three options for introducing gray tones into the design of a children’s room.

as a base

This is the most logical solution. In this case, the neutral range makes up most of the interior. This is a decoration, large decorative elements such as curtains, carpets, sofas.

The base will look more interesting if you can pick up a few shades from the monochrome range. It can also be diluted with white: at least this is the ceiling, as well as with wood — painted or natural, for example, in flooring.

Addition

In this case, we are talking about gray as an additional color when it makes up about 30% of the design. It looks best in the following proportion: a large element + several small ones.

Choose furniture and textiles in grayish shades, and make the finish brighter or, conversely, neutral beige or white. Another design option is an accent wall; in a teenager’s room, you can make a brick in the color of graphite.

accents

This design can hardly be called gray, it is presented here minimally.

To make the accents interesting, we suggest introducing the gamut as follows: choose a decor with prints in the appropriate shades and complement it with larger elements. For example, you can take wallpaper with drawings or draw a picture-graphic right on the wall, and support grayish motifs with textiles, carpet or small accessories.
