How to restart a laptop if it freezes

Rebooting a frozen laptop is an “asterisk task”. And often the friezes are so strong that “Windows” does not even respond to Ctrl + Alt + Del. And if a stationary PC can be pulled out of the socket, then this will not work with a portable PC — it has a battery.

However, there are a couple of ways to restart your laptop if it freezes.

However, before trying to hard reset a frozen laptop, it’s worth trying a couple of “soft” options.

Option one:

  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del — three keys at the same time. They are in different corners of the keyboard;

  2. If you have Windows 10, you should see a bright blue screen. In its lower right corner there will be a shutdown button through which you can reboot the device;

  3. If you have Windows 7, then the “Task Manager” will open. In it, find the unresponsive program and disable it by clicking on “End task”.

Option two:

  1. Press Ctrl+R (two keys on the keyboard);

  2. If the Run window opens, type shutdown /r in it and press Enter.

  3. The process of rebooting the operating system should begin.

  4. But if these two options did not help, then you will have to urgently turn off the power.

Attention! Do not abuse the following methods, as they lead to accelerated wear of components. The hard drive is especially hard hit. So use them only as a last resort — if there is no patience left to wait for the laptop to “droop”, or if strange whistling or clicking sounds are heard from under the case (especially in the area of the hard drive).

How to reboot with the power button

This method allows you to restart the laptop if it freezes without turning it off. It works just like it does on desktop computers.

Instruction:

  1. Press the laptop power button and hold it for 5 seconds. During this time, the screen may turn off, but you still do not let go until you count to five;

  2. Release the button and press it again. The laptop should turn on.

  3. Most likely, when booting after that, the operating system will report that the shutdown was performed incorrectly and will offer to start in safe mode. If the shutdown is caused by an unresponsive program, you can ignore this advice and start your system normally.

And if it freezes due to some changes in the system, including the installation of drivers or incompatible software, then it is better to boot into safe mode and remove the application that interferes with the normal operation of the computer.

How to restart a laptop by pulling the battery

This option is not for the faint of heart. But, as practice shows, it often helps, even if the laptop for some reason refuses to turn on after a five-second reboot after a power outage.

Instruction:

  1. Close the screen, ignoring running and hung programs;

  2. Disable device charging;

  3. Turn the device over and remove the battery. Most often, this requires flipping two switches and pulling the battery up;

  4. Leave the computer lying without a battery and charging for ten minutes;

  5. Connect the battery first, then the charger, and turn on the computer.

If the laptop did not turn on after a hard shutdown (power hold for five seconds), but this method helped it “start up”, this indicates quite serious problems on the motherboard. It is worth contacting the service center.
