Compare geyser and drip coffee maker

Choosing a coffee maker for home or office use is not an easy task. After all, the taste, aroma and invigorating properties of a drink loved by many depend on the type of device! And the wrong coffee maker is quite capable of ruining it.

That is why cooking technologies are constantly being improved. You can find a huge number of models on the market — geyser, drip, carob, capsule … And it can be very difficult to choose the right one.

At the same time, the most budget option is a geyser or drip coffee maker. Such models cost from 1.5 to 2.50 $. But which one to choose?

In this material, we will figure out which coffee maker is better — geyser or drip.

Geyser coffee maker

Geyser coffee maker

Geyser coffee makers make very strong coffee. Actually, this is one of the reasons why they are very common in Europe in general — and in Italy in particular, where properly brewed espresso is appreciated. The second reason is that they are inexpensive.

Geyser coffee makers use a rather unusual method of preparation. Structurally, these devices consist of two compartments — upper and lower — interconnected by a tube.

Water is poured into the lower compartment. As the temperature rises, the pressure in it increases. As a result, boiling water is sent through the tube to the upper compartment, where the ground coffee is located. Actually, because of the «hot water geyser» these models got their name.

The design may be changed by the manufacturer. For example, coffee powder is not placed in the upper compartment, but in a special capsule located in the tube. Then a ready-made drink without thick is collected “above”, less strong, but still very rich and fragrant.

Geyser coffee makers are of two types — gas and electric. The first option is the cheapest. Such «coffee machines» are heated on a conventional stove until boiling and the end of cooking. Electric heaters already have a built-in heating element, so you don’t need to put them on the stove.

Depending on where the coffee powder is placed — in the filter capsule or directly in the upper compartment — the drink can be rich and aromatic or strong to bitterness, respectively. This is very important to consider when choosing a device.

So, let’s sum up.

Advantages

    • Simple design for durability and reliability. In gas models, in fact, there is nothing to break, they can last for decades until they go to a landfill;

    • Low water consumption. Almost all liquid turns into coffee;

    • High cooking speed. Especially for models of small volume — for 1-3 cups (30-90 ml, respectively).

Flaws

    • The coffee turns out to be too strong and rich, up to the characteristic bitterness, and not all people may like it;

    • The taste depends very much on the type of geyser coffee maker (or rather, on the location of the ground coffee powder).

It is worth noting that this device can be used to prepare not only coffee but also most other hot dishes. For example, if you place a collection of dry medicinal herbs in a filter capsule, then in a few minutes this device will prepare their decoction. And you can fall asleep loose tea.

The capacity of the dishes is in most cases indicated in espresso cups. For example, the device can be designed for 1, 3, 5 or even 18 servings. Each cup of espresso is 30 milliliters of water.

drip coffee maker

drip coffee maker

Drip coffee makers are widespread both in EU and in the world. These devices are characterized by ease of use, many additional features and at the same time low price. True, drip coffee makers exist in only one version — electric.

The principle of operation of the device is quite simple. It consists of two compartments. Water is poured into the first, the filter is placed in the second, into which coffee is poured. Then, when turned on, water begins to flow into the electric heater, from where it literally falls into the filter drop by drop. Boiling water passes through a layer of ground coffee, saturated with taste and aroma. And in the end, it ends up in a cup or a teapot, depending on the model.

Thanks to this technology of making coffee, it turns out very fragrant, but not too strong. That is, it is not a classic espresso.

However, this cooking technology allows you to equip the device with many additional functions:

    1. Automatic heating mode. Under the coffee pot with the finished drink is a thermo element that does not allow it to cool down. Therefore, it always remains hot — no matter how long ago it was checked;

    1. Overfill protection system. As soon as the coffee pot is full, the heating switches off. Thanks to this, you can pour a lot of water into the appropriate container and not worry that during the day you will need to “refuel” the device;

    1. Fortress setting. A very important feature for home or office use. Thanks to her, lovers of strong and soft coffee do not have to buy two coffee makers.

It is worth noting that coffee in drip coffee makers is poured into special filters. In any case, they are consumables, but they can be disposable and reusable.

Paper filters are disposable. They get wet after the first use. Synthetic (nylon) — reusable. On average, they are designed for 60 uses. And the «gold» — synthetic with metal reinforcement — will «survive» up to 250 brews.

The cheapest in terms of «use price» — paper. For a package of 100 filters, you will have to pay about 250 rubles. Synthetic costs the same, but is designed for fewer brews.

On the other hand, paper filters can slightly affect the taste of the coffee. Together with the finished drink, cellulose fibers enter the coffee pot. In addition, when wet, the paper acquires a rather unpleasant aftertaste that can get into coffee.

Advantages

    • Extremely easy to use. It is enough to pour water into a special compartment of the device, pour the powder into the filter and press the button. The technology will do the rest;

    • Can be equipped with additional functions;

    • Able to prepare a lot of coffee — for the whole family or the whole office — at one time.

Flaws

    • The coffee they make is not a classic espresso, but the most ordinary drink;

    • They need consumables — filters.

When choosing a drip coffee maker, it is important to pay attention to the power, since the strength of the drink depends on it. So, devices up to 600 W cook hard, but slowly. But kilowatt models cook quickly, but it turns out to be quite soft.

What’s better?

So, a geyser coffee maker will help you make classic espresso, and a drip coffee maker will help you make regular coffee with a minimum of effort and time. But the difference between them is not limited to this.
