How to wash cashmere

Cashmere clothing is soft, warm and very durable, since rare fibers in the undercoat of cashmere Chinese and Mongolian goats are used to make this yarn. If you follow the rules for caring for the material, it will last a long time. A suitable washing method for cashmere products is professional dry cleaning, but you can also ensure that your clothes are properly cared for at home.

Preparatory actions

First of all, inspect the product and check if there are pellets on its surface. If there are any, remove them with a special machine.

Next, remove any stains on the fabric. Do not use bleach or bleach. If the stain is very recent, hold the fabric over the steam while the water is boiling, then iron the stain from the inside out.

If the stain is old, use dish soap or liquid laundry detergent. Apply a small amount of product to the stain for 30-40 minutes, then gently rinse the stained area with warm water.

Grease stains are well removed with soda. Pour a small amount of powder on the fabric, wait up to 3 hours and shake out the remaining soda.

You can soak the cashmere product for 30 minutes in soapy water before washing. This will remove strong, old contaminants. If the clothes are not soiled, it is enough to shake them several times to remove the accumulated dust. If fluff and small debris accumulate in the seams, use a cotton swab moistened with water. Internal seams can be cleaned with a brush.

Attention! If there are metal elements on the product, we recommend tearing them off. Without this, the metal under the influence of the washing solution can oxidize and ruin clothes.

Also make sure that there are no objects in the pockets of the product. Fasten your clothes with all buttons.

How to wash cashmere by hand

How to wash cashmere

For washing cashmere products, products intended for the care of wool are suitable. For extra softening of clothes, add shampoo to wash your hair. Regardless of the chosen product, its composition should not contain bleaching components and chemicals with an aggressive effect.

The water should not be hot, otherwise the clothes will shrink significantly. Also, do not use cold water. It is impossible to rinse the product under running water — otherwise the shape of the knitting will be significantly deformed.

If the water is too hard, soda (1 teaspoon per 10 liters of water) or an industrial emollient should be added to the container. Also, this water can be pre-boiled.

Procedure:

  1. Fill a basin with warm water and add a cleaning agent;
  2. Turn the cashmere product inside out and place it in a container;
  3. Gently wash the product in soapy water for 5 minutes. Weakly squeeze the clothes in various places on one side, then turn over and repeat the procedure on the other side;
  4. Fill the container with clean warm water and rinse the item, repeat several times. You can add conditioner during the rinse to make clothes even softer. 1 tsp glycerin will also provide softness and smoothness to the fabric;
  5. Squeeze the product lightly so that the bulk of the water is glass, but do not twist it;
  6. Place the item on a dry towel on a flat surface, roll it into a tube and unfold it. If the clothes are still wet, take a new dry towel and repeat the procedure;
  7. Hang the product on the back of an easy chair, sofa or on a drying rack.

Do not use too much detergent when washing, otherwise it will wash out the paint.

How to wash cashmere in the washing machine

Read the information on the label carefully. Make sure the manufacturer is machine washable. So, if the label says «cashmere (WS) 100%», this means that the product cannot be washed. For such things, only dry washing is permissible — for this you will have to contact the dry cleaner. Hand wash is used when the clothes additionally contain cotton, silk, wool.

If synthetic threads (polyester, acrylic) were additionally used in the production of the fabric, then in this case the machine wash of the product is acceptable.

If you wash a cashmere product with the manufacturer’s prohibition to wet the thing, then the doubler, thanks to which the thing keeps its shape, will be completely washed out. This will lead to significant irreparable defects in the fabric, as a result of which it will no longer be possible to wear damaged clothes.

To wash the product in the machine, you must add a mild detergent. Also in stores there are gels for cashmere wool, which contain softeners. It is not recommended to use standard dry powder: large granules are difficult to dissolve in cool water, which risks spoiling the appearance of clothing. In the absence of specialized products, add baby or standard liquid soap.

Suitable water for washing is warm or cool, as the item will shrink in hot wool.

Procedure:

  1. Turn the cashmere product inside out;
  2. Place the item in a special bag to protect it from friction;
  3. Set the washing cycle to manual, and in its absence — the shortest, with a temperature of up to 30 ° C and a drum speed of up to 600 rpm .;
  4. After washing, place the product on a flat surface. Do not hang it under any circumstances, otherwise it will be deformed.

Automatic spinning in a typewriter is prohibited, as it risks deforming and stretching the fabric. It is enough to let the excess liquid drain, and then straighten the product on a terry towel. Cashmere products should be dried naturally at room temperature. It is unacceptable to place them near sources of light and heat, under direct sunlight.

Items such as cashmere coats or raincoats should be professionally dry cleaned.

Features of storage of cashmere products

How to wash cashmere

Cashmere products should not be crumpled — otherwise the fibers in the threads will be damaged, and the thing itself will stretch and wear out quickly. Fold it carefully and place it on the shelf. Roll your clothes into a roll, avoiding the formation of creases. Put coats and raincoats for long-term storage in a special bag.

It is advisable to place bags of lavender or cedar in the closet where cashmere is stored — this will scare away the moths.

If the cashmere product has shrunk due to improper washing, soak it in warm water, adding 1 tsp. hydrogen peroxide. And if the clothes are stretched, wash them in hot water, then dry them without removing excess moisture.

Do not use an iron. If the cashmere product is wrinkled, it is enough to steam it.
