Compare electric and gas oven

Cooking a delicious dish and at the same time keeping all the nerve cells intact is the dream of any cook. A lot of kitchen appliances are called upon to help in this difficult matter, and the oven is one of the main ones on the list. When choosing the right one, many almost panic, because in the variety of existing options you can simply get lost without finding the best one. What is better to choose for a home: a classic gas model or a technological electric one? Our experts tried to answer this question.

Features and functionality of gas ovens

gas oven

The main advantage of gas ovens is, first of all, their affordable price. Such devices can be found in almost every home. Of course, gas is cheaper than electricity, which is why it is more popular when cooking at home. In some cases, a gas oven is the only reasonable option: we are talking about a situation where the wiring in the house is too weak and the operation of an electric oven can be unsafe.

So what is a gas oven? To begin with, let’s figure out what an oven is in general. This is a metal cabinet with several ventilation openings with a working chamber inside. The space between it and the outer walls is filled with thermal insulation, which helps prevent heat loss.

The action of any oven, regardless of whether it is electric or gas, is based on the transfer of heat in a non-contact way from the heating element to the product. Heat sources are heating elements or an open flame. All ovens, without exception, differ from each other in the number and placement of heaters: the latter can be located not only at the bottom, but also at the top, and even on the back of the appliance.

As a heat source in gas ovens, combustible gas is used, which can be supplied either mainline or in a cylinder. Entering the chamber through the burner nozzle, the gas, mixing with air, forms a mixture. It ignites when exiting through the side holes of the burner. If we are talking about modern models of ovens, the ignition of the flame is carried out automatically thanks to the built-in piezo ignition.

In most cases, gas ovens do not differ in great functionality, they are easy to use, universal (suitable for cooking absolutely any dish). The design of the device is simple and highly reliable. This is a great option for those housewives who are accustomed to traditional stoves and would like to have a proven “apparatus” at hand.

If the gas oven has the “convection” option, the product is evenly baked on all sides. In addition, such devices are «tolerant» to dishes made of absolutely any material: silicone, glass, metal.

There are few downsides to gas ovens. Basically, they belong to inexpensive models of products. This is sometimes poor-quality baking of products (due to uneven heating of the chamber) and the likelihood of gas leakage (in the absence of a protective function, but even it cannot guarantee 100% safety).

Features and functionality of electric ovens

electric oven

Electric ovens usually differ in more diverse functionality than gas ovens and provide uniform heating of the chamber, the temperature in which can reach 300 0C, while in gas — usually no more than 230 0C. Due to this feature, the electric oven is suitable for cooking more types of dishes, in particular, requiring a high temperature.

Electric ovens are equipped with an impressive variety of additional functions, including: several heating modes, convection, timer, grill, defrost food function, pizza cooking mode, steam mode, etc. Most models of electric ovens are equipped with a self-cleaning function. The latter can be pyrolytic (in the process of strong heating, all dirt and grease turn into easily removable ash) and catalytic (burning is split under the influence of special enamel).

ON A NOTE. If you’re leaning towards an electrical cabinet, it’s important to consider the quality of your home’s electrical wiring, as well as the possibility of blackouts and electricity rates in your area. Electric ovens “eat up” a considerable amount of the latter, especially in the process of preparing complex dishes.

Comparative characteristics

Traditionally, we sum up by comparing the key parameters of the two products. Which one is better and is it better at all? Our experts have reached their conclusions.

Heating uniformity / baking quality

This function is usually performed by a built-in fan or the so-called convector option: heat exchange is forced, so that air flows are distributed more evenly. In most models (we are talking about the budget segment), this option is not available.

Most models involve the use of convection technology, which provides high-quality and, most importantly, uniform baking of dishes.

Functionality

A standard set of options, which, as a rule, includes several operating modes, a timer, gas control, electric ignition, less often a grill

An extended set of options, including, in addition to those listed for gas ovens, also: defrosting, pizza cooking, fermentation, heating, steam mode, child protection, etc.

Ease of use

Simple mechanical control

Electromechanical or electronic control. In the latter case, the device turns into smart home appliances.

Self cleaning option

Economy

It all depends on the chosen model. In most cases, gas ovens are more economical than electric ovens. But if we are talking about a multifunctional device with a protection function, etc., such a product can cost more than an electric one.

It all depends on the chosen model. In most cases, electric ovens are less economical than gas ovens. But at the same time they are superior to the latter in many other factors.

Safety

The device may be unsafe due to the explosion of gas in case of its leakage (in this case, our experts recommend paying attention to models with the gas control function — when the wick fades, the gas supply will be automatically stopped). In addition, there is always a chance of burning your fingers in the absence of electric ignition.

The device is highly safe due to the type of heating element used (electricity), the presence of a temperature control function (if the temperature rises excessively, the device turns off automatically) and a triple glass door that prevents the possibility of burns

Price

From low to high (it all depends on the brand, the number of built-in programs and the presence of additional options)
