How to iron silk

Silk is a delicate and delicate fabric that easily gets dirty and torn. Natural or artificial silk, dark or light product — all this affects the process of ironing the material. Information about the care of the product can be found on the label from the manufacturer, but this is not all the rules.

We have prepared recommendations, following which you will quickly learn how to iron silk things.

Make sure that there are no rust stains or dirt on the surface of the iron. If they are, clean it up:

  1. Mix 1 tbsp. l. water with 2 tbsp. l. baking soda;
  2. Apply the paste on the surface of the iron;
  3. Wipe the iron lightly and remove any residue with a cloth dampened with water.

After that, set the iron to the lowest power if it does not have a setting for silk and delicate fabrics. Wait 4-5 minutes until the device warms up. Lay a light-colored cotton cloth on the ironing board.

Attention! We recommend purchasing special nozzles for ironing silk products for the iron. Some modern models come with attachments right away.

Silk garments should be ironed when they are still slightly damp. If the thing has had time to dry, sprinkle it with a spray bottle and place it in a container or plastic bag for 5-10 minutes. Do not use a spray gun during ironing, otherwise water droplets may cause permanent stains.

Also make sure that when you turn on the steam mode, the iron does not start splashing water droplets.

Procedure:

  1. Turn the product inside out;
  2. Smooth out the item to eliminate wrinkles;
  3. Place a small cotton cloth on the spot where you will start ironing;
  4. Press the iron against the surface of the fabric and begin to move it. The device cannot be kept in one place for too long — otherwise the silk may burn;
  5. Move the cotton fabric to the next part of the silk product;
  6. After ironing, hang the clothes on a hanger for 1-2 minutes, and then put them away in the closet.

If using cotton, increase the temperature of the iron slightly.

If the iron leaves a stain on a silk product, immediately prepare a mixture of water and baking soda. The mixture should have a mushy consistency. Wipe the fabric with it, wait until the mixture dries, and remove the remnants of the product with a soft brush.

How to iron silk with a steamer

The steamer is suitable for silk items with a complex style. However, steam is not suitable for products made from natural silk: otherwise, the fibers of the material will lose their strength, and the silk itself will change color and begin to delaminate.

It is necessary to place the product in a vertical position, turn on warm steam and hold the iron at a distance of 6-7 cm from the silk. To ensure material safety, cover clothing with gauze. Use a steamer attachment designed for delicate fabrics.

Movements must be fast, uniform and very precise.. If there is too much moisture on any part of the product, it will have to be washed again.

A tight silk dress, a light shirt should be sprinkled with a starch spray. But for dark silk, this option is not recommended, otherwise stains will appear on the surface of the product.

You can also use an iron. Hang the product on a coat hanger, cover it with gauze, heat up the iron and turn on the steam function. Steam the thing at a distance of 6 cm. This option is suitable if the product has a complex cut, and information from the manufacturer has not been preserved.

If you do not want to use household appliances, hang the product over the bathtub on a coat hanger, and fill the bathtub itself with hot water. Let the silk thing hang over the bath for 30 minutes — after that it will quickly smooth out.

What to do with strong folds and creases

Strong wrinkles can be eliminated with the same steamer.

Another option is with a hot kettle:

  1. Boil water in a kettle;
  2. Place a silk product (those places that are not ironed or steamed) over the kettle;
  3. Wait until the wrinkles are smoothed out.

You can hold the thing over the kettle for no longer than 4-5 seconds. Otherwise, you risk hopelessly spoiling the product.

Another way to get rid of strong creases or stretching of a silk product is a solution of glycerin. Add 1 tbsp. l. glycerin in 5 liters of water. Stir the solution well and place the silk in it. Wait until the clothes are dry and iron them gently.

How to prevent severe wrinkles

Silk items are best washed by hand, with water temperature up to 30 ° C. It is recommended to use liquid detergents. Also suitable for baby soap, powder for washing baby clothes.

It is unacceptable to bleach silk, since the aggressive effect of chlorine destroys the threads of the material. Silk things are not soaked, and if the pollution is strong, then the procedure lasts up to 10 minutes.

To prevent the product from deforming, do not twist or wring it out after washing. Place it on a horizontal surface on a towel and wait until it absorbs excess water. Then hang your clothes on a hanger. You can’t immediately hang a silk product on a hanger, otherwise it will stretch out a lot.

Test the iron or steamer on an inconspicuous area of clothing before ironing. If the soleplate does not stick to the surface of the product and does not damage the fabric, you can start ironing.

Is artificial silk really not so capricious to care for? Compared to natural material, it is easier to iron, however, the rules listed above must also be observed with it.

If the silk is knitted or acetate, then such a product does not tolerate any ironing. It is enough to properly dry such things. Wash the product, lay it on the countertop and melt all the creases, folds. Leave the product in this position until it dries.

The taffeta material is ironed from the inside or from the front side. However, in the latter case, several layers of gauze must be applied to the product.
